In addition, four of his athletes have qualified for the state meet in the high jump within the last five years. Tom is available to work with athletes ages 7–18 and is passionate about helping young athletes build speed, strength, confidence, and proper technique while reaching their individual goals.
Course Description: Discussion and practice of approach, takeoff, and bar clearance in phases. Use of a controlled J-shaped approach to build proper curve running and gather horizontal velocity into vertical lift. Emphasis of penultimate step mechanics. Discussion and practice of takeoff force production with plyometrics and some strength work. Athletes will convert horizontal speed into vertical height. Practice of scissor and Fosbury-related drills over low barriers, gradually raising the bar to reinforce body awareness in bar clearance. A combination of technical practice with short maximal sprints, so athletes learn to coordinate speed and jump mechanics together. Athletes will meet at 6:00pm on Monday and Wednesday and last generally an hour. Athletes need to bring a water bottle and have good running shoes. Video will be shared to discuss technique.
There is no recommended number of lessons or schedule of lessons. Every person may choose the number of lessons desired and a schedule that works best to meet each specific need. Some families feel that 3 lessons max are sufficient, while others spend an entire summer taking private lessons. If in doubt, schedule one or two lessons with your instructor of choice, and talk with them about what the goals are for the child/adult. Their opinion may be beneficial to how you'd like to structure private lessons this summer.
Lessons cannot be scheduled less than 24 hours out. Please cancel within 24 hours to receive a refund, or to be given the opportunity to reschedule. If extenuating circumstances occur, and you cannot make it to your scheduled lessons, please call your instructor at least 3 hours before your lesson (phone number will be in confirmation email). No shows will result in a forfeit of the lesson cost. Your instructor will connect with you directly should there be a cancellation due to weather. After a cancellation, please call the Community Education office at 507.664.3649 to request a refund, or to move your canceled lesson registration to a new available lesson time.
