  • Behind-The-Wheel (BTW) - For off-site Classroom students

    The six-hour Behind-the-Wheel For Off-Site Classroom students is available following completion of the classroom session for students who completed their 30 hour classroom phase at an online facility or program other than Northfield Community Education. Any online classroom program must be on the State of Minnesota Approved Online Classroom Driving Training Program List. BTW students provide a "Letter of Completion" from the classroom service provider before registering for Behind the Wheel-Classroom taken elsewhere.   • Drivers Education Behind the Wheel

    The six-hour Behind-the-Wheel experience is available following completion of the classroom session. Students must be at least 15 years old, have successfully completed 30 hours of Classroom Drivers Education and have their permit. We recommend completing your three 2-hour sessions close to the time of your DMV road test. Focus on logging practice hours first, then contact us 3–4 months before your test to schedule your appointments. Then after successful completion of the Behind-the-Wheel instruction, students will earn a Certificate of Completion which is necessary to apply for a driver's license. Please note: If you fail to attend the driving appointment you are registered for or cancel your appointment on the same day (within 12 hours) a drop/add fee of $30 will be assessed for each missed appointment if money is refunded, $30 will be subtracted from the registration fee
  • Drivers Education Classroom

    This class is the first step on the road to a driver's license. We offer a complete driver education program conducted by certified instructors. Students aged 19 and younger must complete 30 hours of in class instruction before they are able to take the permit test. Important: Registering for the Driver’s Education classroom portion only means your student will receive a Letter of Completion after the 30-hour course. This letter cannot be used to take the permit test at the DMV. To become eligible, you must also enroll in a Behind-the-Wheel program and receive a Blue Card from that provider. Please note: Enrolling in the Drivers Ed Combo package enrolls your student in both Drivers Ed Classroom and Behind The Wheel. If you'd like your student to receive their blue card immediately following the 30 hour Classroom course, please register for the Combo package. What is a typical class like? What is needed for class? Class meets Monday-Friday, 3 hours each day (if there is a holiday, class will meet for 3 hours 20 minutes).The maximum number of students in class is 50. Students should bring a highlighter, notebook and writing utensil along with their school issued iPad. Manuals are provided for those without a school issued device. Usually class begins with review. The remainder of the class includes chapter reading, worksheets, group activity and chapter testing. What if my child misses a day? Your child may miss up to 1 day and still pass the class. Make-up work will be assigned. This makeup work must be turned in before receiving a Letter of Completion. If more than one class is missed, the missed seat time must be made up in a subsequent classroom session.

    Driver’s Education Classroom This class is the first step toward earning a driver’s license. Our comprehensive Driver’s Education program is taught by certified instructors and designed to prepare students with the knowledge they need to become safe, confident drivers. Students 18 years old and younger are required to complete 30 hours of classroom instruction before they are eligible to take the permit test. Important Registration Information Registering for the Driver’s Education classroom only means your student will receive a Letter of Completion after successfully completing the 30-hour course. This letter alone cannot be used to take the permit test at the DMV. To become eligible for permit testing, students must also: Enroll in a Behind-the-Wheel program, and Receive a Blue Card from the Behind-the-Wheel provider. ? We strongly recommend enrolling in the COMBO PACKAGE if you want your student to be able to test for their permit immediately after the classroom portion ends. What Is a Typical Class Like? Classes meet Monday–Friday, 3 hours each day (If a holiday occurs, class will meet for 3 hours and 20 minutes.) Maximum class size: 50 students Students should bring: Highlighter Notebook pen or pencil School-issued iPad Driver’s Education manuals are provided for students without a school-issued device. Class typically begins with a review, followed by chapter reading, worksheets, group activities, and chapter tests. Attendance & Make-Up Work Students may miss up to one class day and still successfully complete the course. Make-up work will be assigned and must be completed before a Letter of Completion is issued. If a student misses more than one day, the entire classroom course must be repeated.

Start by selecting the classroom section that fits your schedule best. Once your student completes Phase 1, they’ll earn a blue card—an essential step to applying for their instruction permit. Once your student has had their permit for 6 months, simply reach out to us to schedule driving appointments with our expert Behind-the-Wheel instructor as their road test approaches. Once they finish the Behind-the-Wheel instruction, student's information will be entered into the DVS (Department of Vehicle Services) system.     Register for classroom and Behind the Wheel together and save almost 10%! Choose the classroom section that works best for your schedule. Then after your student completes the classroom phase, they will be issued a blue card (Certificate of Enrollment and Classroom Completion). This blue card is necessary to apply for an instruction permit.
