  • Behind-The-Wheel (BTW) - For off-site Classroom students

    The six-hour Behind-the-Wheel For Off-Site Classroom students is available following completion of the classroom session for students who completed their 30 hour classroom phase at an online facility or program other than Northfield Community Education. Any online classroom program must be on the State of Minnesota Approved Online Classroom Driving Training Program List. BTW students provide a "Letter of Completion" from the classroom service provider before registering for Behind the Wheel-Classroom taken elsewhere.   • Driver Education Behind the Wheel

    Gear up for the ultimate driving experience! To qualify, students need to be at least 15 years old, have completed 30 hours of Classroom Driver Education, and possess their instruction permit for 6 months. We recommend scheduling your three, 2-hour sessions closer to your DMV road test to maximize your practice time. Keep track of your driving hours in your practice log, and reach out to us about two-three months before you plan to take your road test to secure your appointments. Simply email Marianne Moser, our Enrichment Coordinator, at mmoser@northfieldschools.org to find dates and times that fit your busy schedule. If you haven’t taken the Classroom course with Northfield Community Education, don’t worry! Check out our Behind-the-Wheel (BTW) options for off-site classroom students. Once you complete the Behind-the-Wheel instruction, you’ll receive a Certificate of Completion Card, which is your key to applying for your driver’s license. Get ready to hit the road with confidence! Cost for replacement of lost or damaged cards is $10. Please note: If you fail to attend the driving appointment you are registered for or cancel your appointment on the same day (within 12 hours) a drop/add fee of $30 will be assessed for each missed appointment if money is refunded, $30 will be subtracted from the registration fee

  • Driver Education Classroom

    This class is the first step on the road to a driver's license. We offer a complete driver education program conducted by certified instructors. After completing this class, students will receive a blue card and can take the permit test at a driver's exam station. Cost for replacement of lost or damaged blue cards is $10. Students under 18 must complete 30 hours of in class instruction before they are able to take the permit test. Once the 30 hours of classroom is complete, the instructor will issue a “blue card”. Students will take the blue card to the DMV as proof of course completion in order to take the permit test. Once your child passes the permit test at the DMV they can drive with someone over the age of 21. What is a typical class like? What is needed for class? Class meets Monday-Friday, 3 hours each day (if there is a holiday, class will meet for 3 hours 20 minutes).The maximum number of students in class is 50. Students should bring a highlighter, notebook and writing utensil along with their school issued iPad. Manuals are provided for those without a school issued device. Usually class begins with review. The remainder of the class includes chapter reading, worksheets, group activity and chapter testing. What if my child misses a day? Your child may miss up to 1 day and still pass the class. Make-up work will be assigned. This makeup work must be turned in before receiving the blue card. If more than one class is missed, the entire class needs to be repeated.

    Register for classroom and Behind the Wheel together and save almost 10%! Choose the classroom section that works best for your schedule. Then after your student completes the classroom phase, they will be issued a blue card (Certificate of Enrollment and Classroom Completion). This blue card is necessary to apply for an instruction permit. Once the permit has been obtained, the student should practice driving with parents and then contact us to schedule driving appointments with our Behind the Wheel instructor closer to the date of their road test. *Email Marianne at mmoser@northfieldschools.org or call 507.664.3648 to arrange dates/times that fit your schedule.   • Driver Education Parent Awareness Presentation

    For parents of teen drivers: Driver Education Classroom instructors and an officer from the Rice County Sheriff's Office will present the "Point of Impact" program and will be available to answer any specific questions afterwards as it relates to community based Driver Education and local law enforcement. After attending this event, parents will receive a certificate that reduces their student’s required driving hours from 50 hours to 40 hours. The objectives of this "Point of Impact" presentation is to increase parental awareness of: All teen driving risks present today Current driving laws in MN and best practices for teen drivers and their parents Parental involvement with the Driver's Education learning process Resources available to parents and their teen drivers This event is free, but please register in advance under the parent's name and note your student's full name in the question area (first, middle, last) so we can prepare your certificate. Students are welcome to attend, but the presentation is directed to parents.
